ARCHIVE LOOKUPS · CHECKED 30 OCTOBER 2026

Alternatives when archive.ph is down

If archive.ph won’t load, there are other public places to look for an archived copy of a page. This page lists them, says what each can and can’t do, and explains what ByeWall, our free browser extension, does: it keeps two archives one click apart. ByeWall is not affiliated with archive.ph, archive.today or the Internet Archive.

IS ARCHIVE.PH DOWN?

First, work out
what is wrong.

We can’t tell you whether archive.ph is up right now, because ByeWall doesn’t monitor any archive. ByeWall’s own options page puts it this way: a missing snapshot, a provider outage and a verification challenge are different things. Check which one you are seeing.

01 /

Try another address of the same site.

archive.ph is one of several addresses of archive.today. Wikipedia lists archive.today, archive.fo, archive.is, archive.li, archive.md, archive.ph and archive.vn, and ByeWall treats all of them as archive addresses. Whether a given one loads for you depends on your network.

02 /

Rule out your own side.

Try another network or browser, or ask a down-or-not checker such as downforeveryoneorjustme.com. A captcha you can’t pass is not the same as an outage, and ByeWall can’t complete a captcha for you.

03 /

Look in another archive.

A different archive may hold a copy that archive.ph can’t show you right now. The next section covers where.

WHERE ELSE TO LOOK

Other public places
for an archived copy.

01 /

The Wayback Machine.

The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine at web.archive.org. Enter the page’s address in its search box and choose Browse History. A page is only there if its crawler or a person saved it, and a page may be missing because it was missed, blocked by robots.txt, or excluded at the site owner’s request, per the Internet Archive’s help page. Its Save Page Now saves one page once.

02 /

archive.today, at another address.

The same service as archive.ph (see above). If one address is slow or blocked on your network, another may not be. That is a guess worth one minute, not a promise.

03 /

Not Google’s cache.

Google removed the cached link from search results in early 2024 and later stopped the cache: operator, per Search Engine Land and its follow-up. It is no longer a place to look.

Want one extension that searches more archives than ByeWall does? See our comparison of Wayback Machine extensions for Firefox, which includes Web Archives, an open-source extension that searches several archives, from its Firefox listing.

WHAT BYEWALL DOES

Two archives,
one click apart.

01 /

One click, one archive.

The toolbar button or Alt + Shift + B (Option + Shift + B on a Mac) opens archive.today’s lookup for the page you’re on, in a new tab. ByeWall does not query several archives at once: each click opens one.

02 /

Right-click for the Wayback Machine.

Right-click the page or a link and choose ByeWall → Try Wayback Machine. Archive options, in the same menu, has a box for any address with a button for each archive.

03 /

Only the address you chose.

ByeWall removes known tracking parameters and the part after # before it sends the address, and refuses local, IP-based or custom-port addresses, addresses with sign-in details, and addresses with token-like parameters. It never creates a snapshot unless you pick that separate step.

Its two permissions are activeTab and contextMenus; see the privacy page. ByeWall is free, with no account. For how it compares with other archive.today extensions, see archive.today extension for Chrome and Firefox.

THE CATCH

Some pages have
no copy at all.

ByeWall only opens copies that already exist in public archives. If neither archive has the page, or the copy is incomplete, ByeWall can’t change that. Chrome and Safari versions are not in their stores yet; Firefox has a store version.

archive.ph, archive.today and the Wayback Machine are third-party services, and ByeWall is not affiliated with any of them.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Questions about
archive.ph.

Is archive.ph the same as archive.today?

archive.ph is one of several addresses of archive.today; Wikipedia lists archive.today, archive.fo, archive.is, archive.li, archive.md, archive.ph and archive.vn. ByeWall treats all of those as archive addresses. It is not affiliated with any of them.

Is archive.ph down right now?

We cannot tell you. ByeWall does not monitor any archive. A page that will not load can be an outage, a captcha or a block on your network. Try another address of the same site, another network, or a general down-or-not checker, then try the Wayback Machine.

Does ByeWall check several archives in one click?

No. One click opens one archive in a new tab: archive.today from the toolbar button or Alt + Shift + B, and the Wayback Machine from the right-click menu or the options page. It does not query both at once.

Why is there no archived copy of my page?

An archive only has pages its crawler or a person saved. The Internet Archive says a page may have been missed, blocked by robots.txt, or excluded at the site owner's request. Some pages have no copy in either archive, and ByeWall cannot change that.

Does Google still have a cached copy?

No. Google removed the cached link from search results in early 2024 and later stopped the cache: search operator, so it is no longer a place to look.

Is ByeWall affiliated with archive.ph?

No. ByeWall is an independent, free extension from Basalt. archive.ph, archive.today and the Wayback Machine are third-party services whose names we use only to describe where ByeWall looks.
